The ULSTER CANCER FOUNDATION is the leading local cancer charity in Northern Ireland. We were established in 1970 to combat cancer in Northern Ireland.
Our mission today is:
The Ulster Cancer Foundation is a local charity that helps to save lives and enhance the quality of life of everyone affected by cancer through care services, research, prevention, public campaigns and advocacy’
Care Services
Aim:
To provide a range of care services and information to meet the needs of all those affected by cancer
· We provide up to date and easily understood information on all aspects of cancer
· We provide a professional and accessible counselling service
· We provide a network of support groups
· We provide a peer support service of people who have had cancer to help those with a cancer diagnosis
· We provide a fitting service for women who have had breast surgery and those with hair loss following treatment
· We provide a range of therapeutic and social activities
Cancer Research
Aim:
To promote and support internationally competitive, high quality research into the causes, treatment and prevention of cancer
· We support high quality programmes of cancer research
· We publicise and disseminate research findings
· We communicate research activities to the general public
· We explore funding opportunities
Cancer Prevention
Aim:
To reduce the risk of developing cancer and promote its early diagnosis.
· We work in partnership to provide a comprehensive range of prevention programmes
· We initiate and develop public campaigns
· We provide a consultancy and training service
· We target prevention services at hard to reach groups and those most at risk
· We focus prevention programmes particularly at young people
· We facilitate policy implementation in community settings
· We work to reduce the prevalence of smoking
· We work to eradicate smoking in all public places
Campaigning & Advocacy
Aim:
To raise professional and public awareness of cancer issues and influence policy makers to improve cancer services and public health policy.
·We act as an advocate for best practice and policy in relation to cancer issues
·We monitor, review and respond to cancer services and prevention strategies
·We influence key media, opinion formers and policy makers in advancing the Ulster Cancer Foundation’s aims and objectives
