Turkish Association for Cancer Research and Control is a voluntary anti-cancer organization, which was founded in 1947. The association works on cancer control issues such as prevention, early detection, tobacco control, patient support, supports cancer research and deals with educational activities at national and international level.
Some of the achievements of the foundation are the implementation of the first cancer hospital in Turkey in 1962, the organization of the First National Cancer meeting in 1975, the publication of the first cancer Journal in Turkey “Turkish Journal of Cancer” since 1973. It contributed to the establishment of the first Hope Lodge for Cancer Patients in Turkey.Organised the First Cancer Patient Forum in collaboration with UICC, under the auspices of the President of Turkey on 7-8 April 2006, being repeated every year.
The association organizes scientific meetings, nationwide programs for cancer awareness like conferences in schools, interviews for newspapers and TV,WEB based information services. It organizes the cancer awareness week during the first week of April each year and also coordinates World Cancer Day activities. Books, brochures, posters, pamphlets are distributed for public and profesional education. It supports cancer researches and organizes the Terry Fox Run regularly in collaboration with Canadian Embassy. A cancer patient support group was also established in 2005.
The association established a toll-freeCancer Help Line providing patients and general public with answers totheirguestions about breast cancer in 2007.
It has 8 branches in different cities which are listed as follows: Adana (1964), İzmir (1966), Kayseri (1967), Antalya (1985), Trabzon (1992), Gaziantep(1996), Bursa (1997), Konya(2005).
Since 1969 the association is member of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and 2003 of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL). The association had been awarded with “2008 UICC Outstanding Cancer Organization Award for Excellence in Cancer Control”.The award had been presented on Wednesday 27, August 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland during Gala Dinner of UICC General Assembly.
