The ECL NCCP meeting was hosted by the Irish Cancer Society in their premises in Dublin from 25 - 26 June 2009, and was attended by representatives from 11 different leagues and societies, ranging from Northern Ireland to Turkey.

The workshop served as the kick-off meeting for the project and had the following aims:

1. Provide an overview on NCCPs;

2. Give leagues the opportunity to share experiences and lessons learned in the involvement of the development and/or implementation of NCCPs;

3. Provide a platform for discussion on how leagues can start to become involved or increase their involvement in the NCCP process; and to

4. Identify relevant areas for cancer league involvement in an NCCP, e.g., research, public awareness, cancer patient support, early detection.

Key speakers provided an overview on NCCPs from different perspectives. Presenters included host and Irish Cancer Society CEO John McCormack, NCCP project Chair Dr Renee Otter of the Dutch Association of Comprehensive Cancer Centres, Dr Andreas Ullrich from the World Health Organization, Professor Tom Keane from the Irish Cancer Programme and Dr Ward Rommel from the Flemish Cancer League. All addressed the current and potential roles of cancer leagues in the formulation and implementation of NCCPs.

The workshop allowed for exchanges among the leagues on best practices and lessons learnt in the four areas of public awareness, prevention, research and patient support. With a range of leagues from across Europe from the geographical corners of Northern Ireland to Hungary, participants shared their experiences and learned of new methods of reaching out to and supporting cancer patients.

The most fruitful sessions in the workshop were the exchanges among the leagues on best practices and lessons learnt in the four areas of public awareness, prevention, research and patient support. With a range of leagues from across Europe from the geographical corners of Northern Ireland to Cyprus, participants shared their experiences and learned of new methods of reaching out to and supporting cancer patients. By the end of the two days, participants were ready to commit to taking three new areas of work that they had learnt about in the workshop back to their leagues to try out in order to contribute to their work on NCCPs.

Project participation is still open to all ECL members. If you missed this workshop but are interested in following this work and/or would like to join the project, please contact the ECL Secretariat. The next NCCP project meeting will take place in conjunction with the ECL annual meetings the week of 13 - 15 October 2009, and is open to any member league interested in the project so long as they inform us first of their attendance.

Hope to see you in October!
