The 6th European Parliament mandate is coming to an end and Europe wide elections on 4-7 June 2009 will select 736 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) for the 7th mandate from 2009-2014.At least half of the MEPs will be new, meaning few familiar faces. There is a window of opportunity in 2009 to identify new champions for tobacco control.
The goal of the Campaign for a Tobacco free
The campaign for a tobacco free
There are two key elements to the campaign.
- Organising two events in the Parliament - one to thank outgoing champion MEPs and a second event later in the year to welcome new champion MEPs
- Mapping the MEP candidates for the election and encouraging them to sign on to a manifesto pledge which pledge to “Prohibit tobacco advertising , Run against tobacco smuggling , Tax tobacco smoking , Protect people from tobacco smoke, Help people stop smoking , Stop the tobacco industry’s influence on policy makers , Make the tobacco industry liable for its actions”
