SAVE THE DATE: November 13, 2012 for a collaborative meeting between the MEPs against Cancer and the Patient Support Working Group on working towards an European definition of disability that includes cancer patients and people with other chronic diseases.
The Patient Support Working Group (PSWG) is currently led by Olwyn Ryan of the Irish Cancer Society and supported by Board Member Joan Kelly also of the Irish Cancer Society. This working group replaces the former ECL working group on Patients Rights, to provide for a wider focus on patient support issues. Activities of the previous Patients Rights Working Group included the development of guidelines and posters for patients' rights, meeting with politicians, and exploring empowerment issues.
Supporting patients, especially via the Patient Support Working Group (PSWG), is one of the most important areas of work for ECL!
The current working areas for the Patient Support Working Group are:
1. Employment and cancer patients
2. Access to Financial Services
3. Psychosocial Screening and Support
4. Monitoring trends in Palliative Care
The main event in 2011 for the Patient Support Working Group was an EU Commission-cofunded conference 7-8 September 2011 in Brussels on “Continuing Cancer Care”. This conference focused on rehabilitation, credit and insurance, psychosocial services, palliative care, and employment issues.
The Patient Support Working Group meets twice a year with regular email and teleconferencing contact in between. For more information about the next meetings and membership please contact the ECL secretariat (PSWG (at) europeancancerleagues.org)
